Designers and makers of ethical off-grid cabins

DESIGN AND CRAFTSMANSHIP

Inspired by the natural environment, we create spaces in which to retreat, recharge and reconnect.

Bothanna Cabins was born out of a passion for craftsmanship, contemporary sustainable design and a desire to reconnect with nature. Our vision is to create off-grid experiences that allow people to reconnect with nature and disconnect from modern life. We believe that well-designed, ethical timber buildings placed in extraordinary locations can help people reconnect with the natural world and with themselves.

It all started with a single, modular bothy build for Drummuir Estate in Moray. Built entirely from timber and other natural or recycled materials, it was a prototype for a low impact, pre-fabricated building that could be located anywhere. Since then, Bothanna Cabins has worked with a number of Scottish landowners, all passionate about sustainability, to create low-impact cabin developments.

Based at our workshop based in East Lothian, we deliver projects for clients who share our vision to reconnect with our natural landscapes. We deliver a personal service to the highest level of craftsmanship and attention to detail, designing and fabricating contemporary turn-key products. We have a limited range of BUY NOW cabins, as well as offering a fully Bespoke Design & Build Service.

Whether you are a farmer looking to start a cabin development for commercial rental, or a family looking to create a wild retreat, we can help.

We work with Scotland’s  landowners to make and install off-grid cabins that sit harmoniously in the wild landscape. With sustainability at the core of our practice we ensure that all builds meet current sustainability standards, and we work towards leaving a zero-carbon footprint.

OUR CABIN MAKERS

At Bothanna Cabins we have a highly skilled team of craftspeople and designers. We guarantee the highest design and build quality.

Founding Director – James Hunt

James started building treehouses in the old ash tree at the bottom of his garden in rural Norfolk when he was 8 years old. 30 years on, he is still crafting buildings from natural and recycled materials.

James travelled extensively during his 20’s, instinctively gravitating towards wild and remote corners of the planet, such as the deep valleys of the Himalayas and the rural plains of India, working in a variety of professions including shepherding, ghillying and carpentry. A passion for making and designing eventually led him to study a foundation diploma in Art and Design at Edinburgh College in 2008, moving on to achieve a Masters in Architecture at Edinburgh College of Art & Edinburgh University in 2014.

As both architect and experienced carpenter, James started Bothanna Cabins with the aim of designing and creating low-impact buildings that are firmly connected to the environments surrounding them, drawing on traditional methods & materials, but with a keen eye on sustainability & modern techniques.

“Having travelled extensively through central & southern Europe, east Asia and the Indian subcontinent, my research in rural and traditional cultures - particularly construction & land management - informs my practice today.”

Designer & Maker – Andy Bradshaw

After graduating from a design engineering degree, a stint in an office job convinced Andy that he was missing out on half the fun – actually building things! Ever since, he has striven to be as involved as possible in the whole design and build process, from making interactive museum installations and furniture, theatre sets and van conversions, to steel fabrication and timber cabins .

A curiosity for wild places and travel has seen him work around the world, before an interest in renewable energy led to Andy settling in Scotland, working on wind turbines and wind farm high voltage infrastructure. After a 6-month family road trip around Europe during the heart of the Covid crisis, he has now returned to the world of making. In his spare time, he runs a bicycle repair business.

Whatever the scale of work we are involved in, we always bring the keenest attention to detail and a commitment to finding ecological solutions to our client’s needs and desires.
